Some fascia faults can be mended and some cannot. The deciding factor is usually what is hiding behind the board, so this is how we work it out.
On the semis and short terraces of Brentry the roofline has often been up there since the estates were built, and the boards, soffits and gutters have aged together. Whether to mend one board or renew the whole run depends on how far the damage goes, and how sound the timber behind it is.

When repair is reasonable
A single split board, a loose section or a short run of damage can sometimes be mended. That works when the rafter ends behind are firm and dry, and the rest of the roofline is in fair order. We check carefully first, because a repair on top of hidden rot only delays a bigger job by a short while.
When replacement is the better answer
If boards are soft, warped or failing along most of the run, or if gutters have sagged because the timber will not hold a fixing, replacement makes more sense. We remove the old boards and gutters, check the eaves and rafter ends, then fit new boards, vented soffits or vent strips, and fresh gutters, all in one visit.
Doing the whole run together gives an even finish, and avoids repeated visits for each failing section. It also means the scaffold is only needed once, which keeps the disruption to your drive and garden down to a single, well planned spell of work.
- Board soft, spongy or crumbling when probed
- Gutter sagging or pulling away repeatedly
- Soffit cracked, bowed or letting birds in
- Damp showing on walls under the eaves
Checking what is behind
Behind the fascia sit the rafter ends and the eaves. We look for wet or rotten timber, and for gaps where the roof covering meets the eaves. If rafter ends are damaged, they are repaired before any new board goes on. Where houses are older, we check what the existing soffit boards are made of before disturbing them.
Why UPVC is a common choice
UPVC boards are cleaned rather than painted, which spares owners the cycle of scraping and repainting at height. They are very low maintenance, and come in white, darker colours and wood effect. Garages and porches with their own short runs of board can be matched to the main roofline so the whole house looks consistent.
Garages and porches with their own short runs of board can be matched to the main roofline so the whole house looks consistent, and we can take the downpipes and gutters in the same visit if they need renewing as well.
Making the decision
Ask for a written description of what is being repaired or replaced, including the soffits, gutters and ventilation. Scaffold or safe access will be needed, so it is not a job for a ladder. If any work may need planning or Building Regulations checks, we advise before work starts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just replace the one bad board?
Sometimes, if the boards either side are sound and the colour or style can be matched. We look at the whole roofline first, because one failed board often has others close behind it.
Do the gutters have to come down?
Usually yes. The gutters are fixed to the fascia, so they come off to let the new boards be fitted properly. We refit them or replace them, depending on their condition, and check that they run to the outlets correctly.
Will new boards change how the loft breathes?
They can improve it. We fit vented soffits or vent strips so air can move through the roof space, which helps keep timbers dry. Checking this at the same time is part of doing the job well.
