Repointing a Stack or Rebuilding It: How We Decide

Not every tired-looking chimney needs pulling down and rebuilding. If the brickwork itself is sound and the problem is confined to the mortar joints, repointing is usually the more sensible route: the old, crumbling mortar is raked out to a suitable depth and replaced, which restores weathertightness without disturbing the structure.
